Qualcomm announced on Tuesday that it is partnering with Alphabet’s Google to provide a combination of chips and software, enabling automakers to develop their own AI voice assistants using technology from both companies.

Qualcomm’s chips have traditionally powered mobile phones running Google’s Android operating system. The company has expanded into the automotive sector, providing chips that can power a car’s dashboard and automated driving systems used by General Motors and other manufacturers.

On Tuesday, Qualcomm announced its collaboration with Google to develop a version of Android Automotive OS that will function smoothly on Qualcomm chips.

Many consumers know about Google’s Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which display apps from a phone when connected to a vehicle. In contrast, automakers use Google’s Android Automotive OS to power the vehicle’s computing systems behind the scenes.

Qualcomm and Google announced that automakers will be able to use their joint offering and Google’s AI technology to create unique voice assistants that operate independently of the driver’s phone.

Nakul Duggal, Qualcomm’s group manager for automotive, explained that while Qualcomm and Google have typically operated together but independently, they plan to rethink their collaboration to reduce friction and confusion for customers.

On Tuesday, Qualcomm introduced two new chips: the Snapdragon Cockpit Elite for powering dashboards and the Snapdragon Ride Elite for self-driving features.

They also announced that Mercedes-Benz Group intends to use the Snapdragon Elite Cockpit chip in future vehicles, although they did not specify the timeline or which vehicles will feature the chip.
