G42 has Declares AI Plans for India

G42, an AI and cloud computing company founded in 2018 by Peng Xiao.

India’s rich talent pool attracted international software companies to the country after the dot-com boom. The similar pattern is being followed by artificial intelligence (AI) companies nowadays; among the most recent to benefit from India’s experience is G42, headquartered in the United Arab Emirates.

Manu Kumar Jain, CEO of G42 India, stated that the company wants to use this diversified talent to propel innovation from Asia and establish India as a significant AI powerhouse.

G42, an AI and cloud computing company founded in 2018 by Peng Xiao, is concentrated on developing and implementing technology solutions for a variety of industries in addition to doing research and development in AI.

The national security adviser for the UAE, Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, serves as the company’s chairman. G42 has collaborated with major players in the AI space, such as OpenAI, Microsoft, and NVIDIA, to offer AI solutions for a variety of industries, including data centres, biotechnology, surveillance, and healthcare.

In April, Microsoft invested $1.5 billion in G42, one of its largest allocations in the AI sector. “India, in the next five years, is going to be a large AI superpower. We want to ensure that we play a small role as a catalyst in making this happen.

The three main pillars of the company’s India strategy are building data centres optimised for AI workloads to double India’s current data centre capacity, creating AI models, especially an Indic large language model (LLM), and establishing an 8 exaFLOP machine, the country’s largest supercomputer.

An essential part of this plan is ExaFLOP, a supercomputer capable of doing one quintillion floating-point operations per second (FLOPS).

Simply expressed, one quintillion, or one million million million, maths problems can be processed by this machine every second. These arithmetic problems, which are crucial for complex tasks like artificial intelligence (AI), scientific research, and large-scale data analysis, usually require decimal points.

The more quickly these computations are finished, the more efficiently AI systems process massive amounts of data and reach important decisions.

In context, the fastest supercomputers currently operating in India are in the petaflop range (5 to 13 petaflops), where a petaflop is equal to one quadrillion operations per second. G42’s exaFLOP machine is vital for handling complex AI workloads like deep learning, neural networks, and other computationally demanding applications because of its 800–1,000-fold boost in power.

The UAE’s Ministry of Investment and India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in February to boost bilateral investment in digital infrastructure, including data centres. The G42 projects came after this.

Jain promised future announcements even though G42 hasn’t disclosed many details about the supercomputer.
