The minimum wage rates were last adjusted in April 2024. The Ministry of Labour & Employment stated that the upcoming revision aims to support further workers in unorganised sectors such as building construction, loading and unloading, housekeeping, and agriculture in central establishments.
In a significant move to assist informal sector workers, India will raise minimum wage rates slightly, starting from October 1, 2024.
This adjustment, which modifies the Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA), responds to the increasing cost of living and the necessity for financial relief among construction, mining, and agriculture workers.
The Ministry of Labour & Employment mentioned that the last change to minimum wage rates occurred in April 2024. This upcoming revision aims to provide additional support to those involved in various unorganised jobs, including building construction, loading and unloading, housekeeping, and agriculture within central sphere establishments.
Minimum wage rates will differ based on skill levels—unskilled, semi-skilled, skilled, and highly skilled—and geographical areas categorised as A, B, and C. For instance, in area “A,” the new daily wages will be:
Unskilled workers: Rs 783 per day (Rs 20,358 per month)
Semi-skilled workers: Rs 868 per day (Rs 22,568 per month)
Skilled workers and clerical positions (without arms): Rs 954 per day (Rs 24,804 per month)
Highly skilled workers and security personnel (with arms): Rs 1,035 per day (Rs 26,910 per month)
The Central Government revises the VDA twice a year, on April 1 and October 1, using the six-month average increase in the Consumer Price Index for industrial workers as the basis for calculation.
