G42, an artificial intelligence (AI) company based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), announced on Friday its partnership with US chipmaker Nvidia to collaborate on climate technology. This collaboration precedes the UAE president’s first visit to the White House next week.
The company from the Gulf region stated in a release that the two organisations will work together to create AI solutions to improve global weather forecasting accuracy. Additionally, they will establish an operational headquarters and a climate technology laboratory in Abu Dhabi.
The UAE, led by the government-supported G42, is investing significantly in AI to reduce its economic dependence on oil. Recent partnerships between UAE-based companies and US firms have been formed.
In April, Microsoft revealed its plan to invest USD 1.5 billion in G42, and the two companies announced this week that they would open two centres in Abu Dhabi.
Additionally, Abu Dhabi-based investment company MGX is becoming a general partner in a USD 30 billion fund with BlackRock and Microsoft to invest in AI infrastructure.
However, Washington has become increasingly worried about the UAE and other Middle Eastern countries serving as channels for advanced US AI technology to reach China. Consequently, new restrictions were placed on AI chip exports last year, requiring a license to ship to these countries.
UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan will visit Washington on Monday.
The White House has stated that he will meet with US President Joe Biden to discuss Middle East regional security issues, advanced technology, and AI development.
Anwar Gargash, the diplomatic adviser to the UAE president, informed journalists during a briefing on Thursday that he will also meet with Vice President Kamala Harris and business executives. He emphasised that the primary focus of the visit would be the economy and collaboration in areas such as AI.
