In a blog post on Thursday, the company OpenAI announced the introduction of a new model called “o1”, which is designed to process queries more slowly before providing responses. This model is expected to enable OpenAI’s tools to solve complex problems involving multiple steps, such as intricate math and coding questions.
OpenAI is set to unveil a new AI model internally called “Strawberry” that can carry out human-like reasoning tasks. The company aims to maintain its leading position in a competitive market.
The company stated that as an early model, it does not yet possess many of the features that make ChatGPT useful, like web browsing for information and file and image uploads. However, for complex reasoning tasks, this marks a significant advancement and signifies a new level of AI capability. Therefore, the company has to reset the series to OpenAI o1 and begin with a fresh start.
A beta version of the model will be accessible to paid Plus and Team users on Thursday through OpenAI’s popular chatbot, ChatGPT. Bloomberg reported that the company might release the new model early this week.
The release of this model coincides with OpenAI’s efforts to secure substantial funding and face increased competition in developing more advanced artificial intelligence systems. OpenAI is not the only player in this arena. Competitors like Anthropic and Google claim to have “reasoning” abilities with their advanced AI models.
In its blog post, OpenAI provided examples of the AI model’s responses to coding, English, and math questions and solving a simple crossword puzzle. Noam Brown, a research scientist at OpenAI, mentioned in a series of posts on X that the company is releasing the model in preview to understand how people use it and identify areas for improvement.
The user experience of using OpenAI’s enhanced AI system will differ from what users are accustomed to with ChatGPT, the company’s chatbot. Before responding to a user’s input, the new software will pause briefly while processing several related prompts behind the scenes, which will be invisible to the user, and then summarize what appears to be the best response. This process is sometimes known as “chain of thought” prompting.
OpenAI has been working on enabling computers to perform multi-step actions for a while. For example, in May 2023, the company released a blog post and a related research paper about its endeavours to enhance the AI system’s ability to solve math problems. According to the paper, the company trained a model by rewarding it for each correct step in reaching a solution to a problem rather than solely for producing a proper answer.
