Union Government Appointed Six More Additional SGs for Supreme Court

Brijender Chahar has a long-standing practice in the SC and was part of the BJP legal cell in Haryana.

The Union government is set to be fully represented in the Supreme Court (SC) with six new faces as additional solicitors general (ASGs), bringing the total number of law officers representing the government to 13. The newly appointed senior advocates come from various states and bring expertise in tax matters, constitutional law, and high-profile criminal cases.

Alongside the current ASGs—S V Raju, N Venkataraman, KM Natraj, Aishwarya Bhati, and Vikramjit Banerjee—the appointments committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has given the go-ahead for the appointment of S Dwarkanath, Archana P Dave, Satya Darshi Sanjay, Brijender Chahar, Raghvendra P Shankar, and Raja Thakare.

This brings the total number of ASGs to 11, complementing the top law officers, Attorney General R Venkataramani and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta.

It’s worth noting that the influence of Delhi-based senior advocates in the ASG lineup has diminished as the new appointments bring in senior advocates from different states.

For instance, S Dwarkanath, based in Hyderabad, is known for his expertise in tax matters. Archana P Dave has notably represented women short service commission officers in the Supreme Court. Satya Darshi Sanjay served as additional solicitor general for the Patna HC for five years. Brijender Chahar has a long-standing practice in the SC and was part of the BJP legal cell in Haryana.

With almost five years of experience as an ASG in the central government’s ‘A-Panel’ lawyers, Raghavendra Shankar is recognized for his expertise in tax and constitutional law.
