Indian Businesses Welcome the Rise of Affordable AI Voice Bots

It conducts interviews, poses questions, records, evaluates, and scores candidates based on performance.

Ankush Sabharwal, the co-founder and CEO of CoRover, mentioned that the progression has been from digital-first to mobile-first to Al-first, but the most intuitive way to use technology is through voice.

Earlier this month, high-level personnel from Alphabet Inc.’s Google DeepMind, Microsoft Corp., and Meta Platforms Inc. gathered with technology entrepreneurs in Bangalore to witness the introduction of a new product by one of India’s prominent AI startups. The product could potentially revolutionize how the country’s most populous region engages with technology.

Often referred to as India’s OpenAI, Sarvam AI unveiled software designed for businesses to interact with clients using spoken voice rather than just text. This technology was developed using data from 10 different Indian languages and is priced at one rupee per minute to attract the market. In a video at the event, Vinod Khosla, a billionaire venture capitalist and an investor in Sarvam, emphasized the potential of these voice bots to reach a billion people.

The AI startups may transform India into a testing ground for the next generation of generative AI products, although this has raised some safety concerns in other markets. By integrating AI voice capabilities, technology companies hope to create more interactive, conversational services that can verbally interact with users in real time and automate specific tasks. This is already happening in India across various consumer and business applications.

Samsung-backed Gnani AI handles millions of voice conversations daily for India’s largest banks, insurers, and automobile companies. CoRover AI offers voice bots in 14 Indian languages to the state-owned railway corporation and a regional police force. Haloocom Technologies’ voice bot can communicate in five Indian languages to manage customer service duties and assist in screening job applicants.

CoRover’s voice bot, Ask Disha, was launched this month for India’s train booking company, IRCTC. The bot can book train tickets and complete payments solely through voice on behalf of the customer. Sabharwal highlighted the need for AI agents that can perform tasks rather than just providing information in the country.

Sarvam’s voice bots can handle conversations in multiple languages and act on customers’ behalf, such as scheduling appointments and processing payments. The company has approximately 50 clients, including Sri Mandir, a devotional app with over 10 million downloads on the Android Play Store.

Using Sarvam’s voice software, Sri Mandir’s app can lead individuals through specific rituals at different temples and provide guidance on requesting various blessings. It was mentioned that US companies could not access sufficient spoken Indian language data, including variations in accents from region to region.
