India Plans To Strenghten its Homegrown Defence Technologies: DRDO and IAF

The production of LCA Mark-1A planes is likely to be completed by 2032.

The LCA Mark 2 fighter jets are set to begin flying by March 2026, with full-scale production expected by 2029. The Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft’s mass production is scheduled for 2035. Delays in the timelines were attributed to funding issues related to engine agreements.

These developments were discussed in a recent high-level meeting involving the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Air Force (IAF), presided over by DRDO chairman Dr Samir V. Kamat and Indian Air Force Deputy Chief Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit.

The review meeting at DRDO Bhawan focused on the progress of the development of the LCA MK-II program. Dr. Kamat and Air Marshal Dixit reviewed the progress made by the Aeronautical Development Agency.

Various DRDO Labs and Director Generals of Clusters involved in developing systems and sub-systems, as well as the Flight Testing of the prototype, were present to discuss the development status, risks, and plans to achieve the first fly-worthy prototype.

The timeline for the LCA Mark 2 program was a key point of discussion. The LCA Mark 2 program timeline has been delayed by approximately a year due to delays in releasing approved funds linked to the engine deal for the next indigenous fighter.

The LCA aircraft are scheduled to be powered by American GE engines, with LCA Mark 2 utilising the more advanced GE-414 engine. The Indian government aims to replace the primary fleets with over 250 LCA Mark 2 planes over the next 10-15 years and has placed an order for 180 LCA Mark 1A planes.

The production of LCA Mark-1A planes is likely to be completed by 2032. The Tejas Mark 2 will feature significant indigenisation, with the Uttam radar as its primary sensor. An Indigenous AESA radar is part of the upgrade program for the Russian-origin Su-30 MKI fighters. The Cabinet Committee on Security has approved the design and development of the AMCA aircraft.

The LCA Mark-2 incorporates Indigenous weapons like the Astra air-to-air missile and Smart Anti-Airfield Weapons. Efforts are being made to explore export opportunities for the Mark-2.

Despite delays, progress is underway, and there is a focus on achieving self-reliance in defence production through Indigenous development. India continues to enhance its defence capabilities with homegrown technologies, with close collaboration between DRDO and the Indian Air Force being crucial in achieving these targets.
