Dr. Neeraj Mittal, Secretary of the Department of Telecommunications, introduced the ITU-WTSA-24 Hackathon AI Bharat 5G/6G Sandbox on Wednesday as a component of the upcoming WTSA-24. The event’s purpose is to drive innovation and leverage the potential of AI/ML (Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning) in the next era of communication networks.

Prof Jayadeva of IIT Delhi, DDG (International Relations) & DDG (Standards R&D Innovation), DoT, and Frederic Werner, Head of Strategic Engagement, ITU, actively participated in the session.

The launch occurred in the presence of key figures such as the Head of ITU strategic engagement, ITU Experts, and experts from IIT Delhi. ITU is conducting this global Hackathon in partnership with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) as one of the ancillary events of the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA-24), scheduled to be held in New Delhi from October 15 to 24, 2024.

During his keynote speech, Dr Mittal expressed DoT’s enthusiasm for collaborating with ITU to nurture idolisation and creativity among future technology leaders. He emphasised that together, we have the chance to motivate and enable young minds to develop solutions that will shape our world.

Dr Mittal highlighted that this Hackathon, in collaboration with ITU, goes beyond being just a competition; it serves as a platform for young innovators to translate their visions into reality and have a tangible impact on society.

Welcoming all the young innovators of India and the world to the launch of “ITU WTSA24- AI Bharat 5G/6G Hackathon,” Dr Mittal stated that this is an opportunity to bring together the foremost experts from the country and abroad, young students, experienced mentors, dynamic start-ups, and the industry. It will address practical challenges in employing AI/ML to develop applications and services in networks.
