He announced that India will donate USD 1 million to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre to develop, provide technical support, and preserve world heritage sites. He emphasised that this funding would benefit the countries in the Global South.
At the opening of the 46th Session of the World Heritage Committee in New Delhi on Sunday, July 21, 2024, PM Modi highlighted the importance of heritage as a shared consciousness of humanity and encouraged its use to improve global well-being and foster stronger connections.
Modi also emphasised the global nature of heritage and announced India’s USD 1 million contribution to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre for capacity building, technical assistance, and conservation of world heritage sites, focusing on benefiting countries in the Global South.
During his remarks, PM Modi mentioned the historic ‘Moidams’ of the North East, a mound-burial system of the Ahom dynasty in Assam, which has been nominated for inclusion in the World Heritage List.
He expressed confidence that ‘Moidams’ will gain more popularity and attract more tourism after securing a place on the prestigious list. Modi underscored that the event is hosted in India, one of the world’s oldest civilisations. Modi referred to India’s heritage as history and science, noting a journey of top-notch engineering in its heritage.
The meeting is being attended by over 2,000 delegates from more than 150 countries.
Modi also mentioned the return of ancient artefacts and highlighted that the 46th WHC session is “one of the most ancient living civilisations of the world.”
He praised the engineering accomplishments exemplified by the ancient heritage sites, citing the Kedarnath temple in Uttarakhand and the Brihadishvara temple built by the Cholas.
Modi emphasised that this current generation is more aware of the importance of heritage and referenced projects such as the Kashi Viswanath Corridor, Ram Temple, and the modern campus of the new Nalanda University.
