Nokia announced today that Reliance Jio had selected Nokia as the main supplier of 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) hardware nationwide for a multi-year period. Reliance Jio has one of the largest RAN footprints in the world and is the top mobile operator in India.
According to a press release, Nokia will provide base stations, high-capacity 5G Massive MIMO antennas, remote radio heads (RRHs) supporting various frequency bands, ad hoc network software and base stations under the agreement.
The standalone 5G network that Reliance Jio aims to build will be able to communicate with its 4G network. Reliance Jio will be able to deliver cutting-edge 5G services on the network, including network slicing, ultra-low latency and large machine-to-machine interactions.
In India, Nokia has been around for a long time. Nokia will now supply the three major mobile suppliers in India through this new agreement.
“This is a major win for Nokia in an important market and a new customer with one of the largest RAN footprints in the world,” said Pekka Lundmark, President and CEO of Nokia. “This ambitious project will bring India to India through our industry-leading AirScale portfolio. Millions of people are provided with high-quality 5G service.”
