PM Pays Tribute to APJ Abdul Kalam on His 91st Birthday

Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to former President APJ Abdul Kalam on his 91st birth anniversary and contributions of the ‘missile man.

“Tributes to our former President, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. He is greatly admired for his contribution to our nation as a scientist and as a President who struck a chord with every section of society,” tweeted PM Modi.

He was born on 15 October. 1931 at Tamil Nadu in Rameswaram. He completed his graduation in 1954 from Dr Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, graduated in Science from St Joseph’s College and in Aeronautical Engineering from Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1957. He was a pioneer and led a young team to start this effort in ISRO development and design, leading to the production of composite rocket motor cases. Also, he made significant contributions to developing the first indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-3) in India, successfully injecting the Rohini satellite into near-earth orbit in July 1980. 

Dr Kalam was also responsible for the evolution of ISRO’s launch vehicle programme, particularly the PSLV configuration. After working for two decades in ISRO and mastering launch vehicle technologies, Dr Kalam took up the responsibility of developing Indigenous Guided Missiles at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
