Viacom18 Media to Stream FIFA World Cup on Jio Cinema

Jio Cinema will post all other sporting properties that Viacom18 has, such as NBA.

Viacom18 Media, the broadcasting and digital media company of Reliance Industries, is going to stream the FIFA World Cup tournament on its Jio Cinema app for free. Viacom18 Media clinched the deal to stream FIFA matches in India last year. It is to be noted that the upcoming FIFA World Cup tournament will start on November 18 in Qatar.

Viacom18’s sports CEO Anil Jayaraj said that the digital destination for the Football World Cup would be Jio Cinema. Jio Cinema will post all other sporting properties that Viacom18 has, such as NBA. The athletics Diamond League and ATP Tennis, Fifa will be available to all telecom players, including Jio, Airtel, Vodafone, and their subscribers, across iOS, Android and connected TVs.

Jayaraj further said that Viacom18 Sports’ multi-platform presentation of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 would be immersive and personalised and offer viewers exclusive experiences on JioCinema. He asserted that there are no subscription fees that anybody needs to pay. Anyone can just download the app and start watching football.

The commentary for matches is likely to be available to users in English, Hindi, Bengali, Malayalam, and Tamil. Notably, the Competition Commission of India approved the proposed merger of the Jio Cinema OTT app with Viacom18 Media last month.

Speaking about streaming the football match on Jio Cinema instead of Voot, Jayaraj said that Jio Cinema’s got lifetime downloads of some 400 million. So, it’s quite massive.

PM Modi, Elon Musk Discuss Deepening Tech & Innovation Ties

Dhruva Kulkarni

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Tesla CEO Elon Musk today, discussing opportunities for collaboration in technology and innovation. The interaction builds on their earlier meeting in Washington, DC, this year.

Sharing the update on X, PM Modi said their conversation touched on many subjects, including potential partnerships in emerging sectors. “Spoke to Elon Musk and discussed various issues, including the topics we covered during our meeting in Washington DC earlier this year. We discussed the immense potential for collaboration in the areas of technology and innovation,” he posted.

Modi added that India is committed to strengthening its partnerships with the U.S. in transformative sectors.

In February, the two discussed enhancing collaboration between Indian and U.S. entities in innovation, space exploration, AI, and sustainable development. Their conversation also covered entrepreneurship and good governance.

Tesla’s long-awaited India entry could begin as early as this month, with the company reportedly exploring imports from its Berlin plant. Tesla is also expected to introduce an EV priced under $25,000 and has reportedly started hiring in India.

Maharashtra to Grant ‘Farmer’ Status to 12 Lakh Fishermen for Wider Welfare Benefits

Dhruva Kulkarni

The Maharashtra government is finalising a policy to grant “farmer” status to 12 lakh fishermen across the state. The policy awaits approval from the finance department and the chief minister’s office (CMO) before being tabled for final cabinet approval, likely within the next week.

Once approved, this policy will benefit both inland and marine fishermen, making Maharashtra the first state in India to implement such a plan. Although Andhra Pradesh had worked on a similar proposal, it never received final approval.

The initiative recognises that both agriculture and fishing are nature-dependent professions. While farmers have access to numerous welfare schemes, fishermen have been excluded from such benefits. Granting them “farmer” status will enable them to access government schemes available to the agricultural sector.

Minister Nitesh Rane had announced the plan during the last budget session, with support from then-deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.

The key benefit of this policy is that fishermen can secure bank loans to upgrade their boats from wooden to fibre or electric models, reducing reliance on private lenders. The government expects to spend Rs 70 to Rs 80 crore annually on this initiative.

Fishermen will also be eligible for government insurance and compensation during natural disasters, similar to what farmers receive. Additionally, the fisheries department plans to promote seaweed cultivation to provide an alternative income during the monsoon when marine fishing is restricted. There’s also a focus on increasing inland fishing production, with meetings underway to develop a strategy for growth.

GPS to Replace FASTag? Pay Tolls by the Mile

Dhruva Kulkarni

The Indian government is set to roll out a new toll collection system to replace FASTag and physical toll booths with GPS-based technology.

Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said a new toll policy will be announced within 15 days, with implementation expected to begin in May.

Under this system, toll charges will be automatically deducted from vehicle owners’ bank accounts based on the distance travelled. The technology will use satellite tracking and number plate recognition to calculate tolls, aiming to cut costs, remove toll booths, and reduce traffic delays.

The government plans to use GNSS to monitor vehicle movement and ANPR cameras to verify number plates. This marks a shift away from FASTag, which has been in use since 2016.

The change comes as toll plazas have become expensive and congested. The new system is expected to bring transparency, curb fraud, and ensure fair tolling based on actual road usage.

Gadkari also gave an update on the long-delayed Mumbai-Goa highway, saying it will be completed by June. He acknowledged that legal issues and disputes had slowed progress, but that work is now moving swiftly. Once complete, the highway is expected to boost travel and development in the Konkan region.

He added that projects like the Delhi-Jaipur and Mumbai-Goa highways remain challenging but expressed confidence that India’s road network will surpass that of the US in the next two years.

India’s Trade Deficit Rebounds to $21.5 Bn in March After 3-Year Low

Dhruva Kulkarni

India’s merchandise trade deficit widened sharply to $21.54 billion in March, reversing the relief seen in February when it had narrowed to a three-year low of $14.05 billion.

The spike came as imports surged to $64.51 billion from $50.96 billion in February, outpacing the rise in exports, which increased to $41.97 billion from $36.91 billion.

For the full financial year 2024-25, merchandise exports remained largely flat at $437.42 billion. However, non-petroleum exports reached a record high of $374 billion, growing 6% over the previous year. The Commerce Ministry also estimates overall exports for FY25 to be $820 billion, which could be the highest ever.

On the import front, all major categories saw growth except coal and briquettes. Key increases were seen in petroleum products at $185.78 billion, electronics at $98.73 billion, gold at $58.01 billion, and machinery at $53.55 billion.

Meanwhile, strong export growth was recorded in electronics, garments, tea, plastics, pharmaceuticals, engineering goods, and key agricultural items like coffee, rice, and tobacco.

BMC uses emergency powers as lakes drop to 31% and tanker strike hits water supply

Dhruva Kulkarni

Mumbai is facing a water crisis, with its reservoirs at just 31% capacity due to low lake levels and a water tanker strike.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has invoked emergency powers to manage water tanker operations during the strike.

Mumbai’s total water stock has dropped to 5.67 lakh million litres, significantly lower than last year’s 9 lakh million litres.

The city’s daily water usage is 3,850 million litres, and current supplies will last only 45 days if no rain or alternative arrangements are made.

Smaller lakes are at higher capacity but contribute less, while major lakes like Modaksagar and Bhatsa run low, risking supply cuts.

The ongoing tanker strike, caused by stricter borewell regulations, is worsening the situation, affecting water delivery to homes and construction sites.

BMC has deployed teams to manage seized tankers and is encouraging water conservation to help avoid further shortages.
