Mercedes-Benz plans to develop a wind farm in Lower Saxony, the northwestern state of Germany, by 2025. It is expected to produce a hundred megawatts (MW) of electricity. This capacity is equivalent to over 15 per cent of the company’s annual demand in Germany.
According to media reports, Mercedes is likely to invest a three-digit million figure in a power purchase agreement (PPA) with an as-yet-unnamed partner to purchase the electricity generated by the turbines.
The company has also reported that it is examining, together with local authorities, whether it could put solar panels onto the remaining space in the 800-hectare piece of land in Papenburg. Papenburg is a test track owned by Mercedes.
Headquartered in Germany, Mercedes is a luxury and commercial vehicle automotive brand established in 1926. As of 2020, the company’s production output remains 2,164,187 cars worldwide. It is a subsidiary of the larger Mercedes-Benz Group.
Located in the northwestern part of the country, Lower Saxony is the second-largest state by land area and fourth-largest in terms of population.
