EC Drive to Link Voter ID Cards with Aadhaar from Today

Starting today, the Election Commission (EC) of India will push to link voter ID cards with Aadhaar cards in several states. According to the EC, voter ID cards are linked with Aadhaar cards to identify voters and verify entries in the electoral roll.

In December 2021, the Lok Sabha passed the Election Law (Amendment) Bill, authorising the linking of Aadhaar with voter ID through voice voting.

The EC said linking the voter ID to the Aadhaar card will help identify the name of the person registered in multiple constituencies or multiple times in the same constituency.

The Voter ID card will be linked with the Aadhaar card to confirm voter identity, verify entries in the electoral roll, and register by identifying the same person’s name multiple times in multiple constituencies or the same constituency.

The voter’s Aadhaar number will be given on Form 6B of the notice under Rule 26B of the Electoral Registration Rules 1980. Form 6B will be available online at nvsp.in. After self-certification, voters can complete Form 6B online on the voter portal/app and self-certify to Aadhaar using the OTP received on the mobile number registered with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). Voters will submit Form 6B online with the required attachments without self-verification.

Voter names will not be removed from the electoral roll database as the provision of Aadhaar by voters is voluntary, and they do not provide Aadhaar numbers.
