The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is building a manned spacecraft with the help of doctors for the Gaganyaan mission, India’s first manned spaceflight designed to send astronauts into low earth orbit. ISRO has hired doctors to understand the impact of spaceflight on humans and will design spacecraft accordingly. Astronauts selected for the mission also participated in manufacturing the orbital module.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh said the first unmanned mission of the Gaganyaan series is expected to launch next year. Another uncrewed mission will take place before Indian astronauts aboard a spacecraft for a sojourn in low earth orbit.

A senior ISRO official said the manned spacecraft should accommodate the crew in normal, acceptable conditions and be able to carry out various activities during their stay. Engineers must design spacecraft by identifying potential hazards and developing systems to control such events. The spacecraft should also have facilities for the safe recovery of the crew from any hazardous situation.
