Govt Launches Acceleration Microprocessor Production Programme in India

The government, on April 27, announced the launch of the Digital India RISC-V (DIR-V) initiative to ramp up the production of microprocessors by December 2023. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, mentioned that DIR-V would see partnerships between startups, academia, and multinational corporations.

Chandrasekhar recalled his early days at Intel as a chip designer for the x-86 processor. He noted that many new processor architectures have gone through an initial phase characterised by a wave of innovation. At some point, they all opted for a dominant design.

“ARM and x-86 are just two instruction set architectures – one licensed and the other sold, and the industry has consolidated over the past few decades. However, over the past decade, RISC- V has become a strong alternative for them, with no licensing burden, enabling it to be used by everyone in the semiconductor industry for various design purposes with varying degrees of sophistication,” said.

The Department of Electronics and IT is planning to join RISC-V International as a keyboard member to collaborate, contribute and promote Indian expertise with other global RISC-V leaders.
