Sri Lanka‘s Cabinet of Ministers resigned immediately as the country experienced its worst economic crisis. Education Minister and Leader of the House, Dinesh Gunawardena, informed that the Cabinet Ministers handed over their resignations to PM Mahinda Rajapaksa. He gave no reason for the mass resignation. However, experts believe that the ministers came under severe pressure from the public over the government’s alleged mishandling of the economic crisis triggered by the shortage in the foreign exchange reserve.
The government declared a state of emergency after protestors surrounded the private residence of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on March 31. The government’s poor handling of the economic crisis, where people currently tolerate long hours of power outages and lack of essentials, has outraged the public. There were protests all over the country on Sunday.
