Committee Made For Withdrawal of AFSPA From Nagaland

After demand from several quarters after the killing of civilians in Nagaland on December 4, a committee has been assembled to urge withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Power Act, 1958 (AFSPA), and the panel will submit its report to the government in the next 45 days. Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a meeting to discuss the current scenarios in Nagaland in New Delhi. Chief Minister Nagaland Neiphiu Rio, Chief Minister Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma, Deputy Chief Minister of Nagaland Y. Patton and Naga People’s Front (NPF) Legislature Party Leader T.R. Zeliang also attended the meeting.


A committee to look into the withdrawal of the AFSPA will be formed. It will be Chaired by the Additional Secretary NE, MHA, and the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police of Nagaland. The Committee will submit its report in 45 days, and withdrawal of Disturbed Area and AFSPA will be made under the committee’s guidance. Nagaland CM thanked the Union Home Minister on Sunday and tweeted: “Grateful to Amit Shah Ji for taking up the matter with utmost seriousness. The State Government pleads to all sections to continue maintaining a peaceful atmosphere.”
