Prime Minister Narendra Modi declares that the administration will repeal the three farm laws introduced last year that saw massive protests from farmers, especially in Punjab and Haryana. In his address to the nation, Modi requested the farmers to return to their homes. He said that the centre would set up a committee to discuss all issues impacting farmers. Scientists, farmer groups, state and central officials will be a part of this panel.

In September 2020, Parliament had passed three bills to free up pricing, production and trade in agriculture through ways like contract farming, letting farmers sell their products whenever they want instead of limiting them to government-controlled mandis. Farmers were concerned about the laws as they broke the trust of agriculture produce marketing committees (APMC); they feared that it would lead to the corporatisation of agriculture and indicate the end of the minimum support price (MSP) system.
