US President Joe Biden will join a virtual summit with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) today. Biden will lead the US committee for the ASEAN Summit. The White House said Biden will discuss the commitment of the United States in regional affairs and new initiatives “as we work together to end the coronavirus pandemic, address the climate change, promote economic growth, and address local challenges and opportunities.”

He is also expected to ensure ASEAN that America focuses on engagement with India, Japan and Australia and a deal with Australia to supply nuclear-powered submarines are not meant to remove ASEANβs central regional role. Biden has given no sign to return to the local trade that Trump withdrew in 2017. The ASEAN Summit meetings will start without Myanmar military leader Min Aung Hlaing, who defeated a civilian government on Feb 1, 2021.
