Govt to Buy C-295 Military Transport Planes

The defence ministry will finalise about Rs 20,000 crore Airbus-Tata deal to get fifty-six C-295 to replace the Avro-748 planes of the Indian Air Force. The Airbus Defence and Space will deliver 16 aircraft of Spain, and the remaining 40 jets will be made in India by Airbus Defence and Space and the Tata Advanced Systems Limited in 10 years of the signing of the contract officials told.

This is the 1st assignment in which a military aircraft will be manufactured in India by a private firm. “All 56 aircraft will be installed with local electronic warfare suite,” the defence ministry said on September 8. The ministry had said that a servicing department for the C-295MW plane would be set up in India. “It is assumed that this plant will act as a local MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) hub for many modifications in the C-295 aircraft,” it said.
