The Covid-19 virus connected with the Tokyo Olympics increased to 148 after organisers reported 16 new cases on Monday. The organisers announced that 3 athletes, 4 contractors, 8 Games-concerned staff and 1 Games employee are found to be Coronavirus positive. All three athletes are not staying at the Olympic Village, which has recorded 16 cases since it has opened. The three athletes and seven Games-concerned staff have been put under the necessary 14-day quarantine.
The group that has been hit by Covid-19 after coming to Tokyo includes the Czech Republic, the USA, Chile, South Africa and the Netherlands. The Czech Republic is looking into possible health safety protocol breaches by its staff after four athletes tested positive for the coronavirus, forcing withdrawals from events like beach volleyball and road cycling.
On Monday, the organisers requested the media who are covering the Games to follow Covid-19 protocols, saying that they have been “made aware of incidents of alleged non-compliance”. They warned of “disciplinary consequences” for violating any rules on health safety precautions.
